You’ve now entered into this very unique period of time, the time you’re officially a fiancée. On average you’ll keep this title for 12-18 months before tying the knot. Did you know that the word fiancée comes from the French meaning betrothed? And before that deriving from a word that means “a promise”? It’s a sweet sentiment and loving title. While the planning officially begins, we adore the idea of documenting this beautiful time in a relationship with an engagement shoot.
While engagement shoots have come a long way from very formal portraits displayed in the daily newspaper, you may have some questions. We’ve rounded up some of the most popular questions we’ve received from clients over the years.
How Early Should We Book our Engagement Shoot?
You know what they say, “there’s no time like the present” and while there is no strict protocol to follow for when you should have your shoot there are a few things to consider. If you’re planning on having your engagement photos to use for save the dates, then the sooner the better. It allows us time to plan an appropriate day, edit the photos and then have them back to you to send to the printers. While availability may also be concerned, an engagement shoot does allow for more flexibility, as long as your photographers (that’s hopefully us!) and you are available your engagement shoot can be held.
How Long is an Engagement Shoot?
Our engagement shoots last up to 1.5 hours. We think that it’s the perfect amount of time to get the shots you’ll love without overdoing it. It allows for enough time to get comfortable in front of the camera and to help be able to tell your story in a personalized way.
Where Should we Shoot?
When it comes to location, first consider what kind of environment you would like! Do you want old beautiful buildings as your backdrop? A lush field or an aged forest? The hustle and bustle of the city streets? Once you have an idea of what kind of photos you’d like we can make it work. If you know the vibe but not exactly the location, well we know so many incredible spots of every kind.
What Should we Wear? What Shouldn’t We Wear?
This is probably the number one question asked by couples. Here’s what we recommend. Select clothing that fits well, anything baggy won’t exactly capture well. Easy on the patterns or intricate designs, choose solid colors that compliment both outfits. Bright colors aren’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you choose a cityscape for your location, just ensure they’re not clashing. Choose comfortable footwear that is location-appropriate and make sure your hands are well-moisturized and fingernails sparkling. Pro-tip: Head to your local jeweller and have your ring cleaned so that it sparkles its brightest.
